It is not enough to assume that bishops were automatically concerned enough about heresy to oppose it. Before the late fourteenth century, English bishops as a whole seem to have been generally disinterested in the problem of heresy; surviving episcopal records from the fourteenth century up to the 1380s reveal only about a dozen cases in all, and this is not entirely explainable with the argument that there simply was little heresy in England.
