Figure 3-5 illustrates packet-based LSR operation with multiple levels of labels in the stack. LSR1 performs the edge LSR function. It applies the initial set of labels to the packet after performing a conventional longest-match lookup on the IP header and determining a FEC for the packet. Intermediate LSR2 swaps out the top-label 7 and replaces its value with 8. At the egress, LSR4 performs a label lookup, pops the label, performs a Layer 3 lookup, and forwards the packet to the external next-hop router.
Packet-Based LSR Operation with a Multi-Level Stack Penultimate Hop Popping The packet-based LSR operation described in the preceding section has certain drawbacks associated with the double lookup performed at the egress LSR4. LSR4 would need to examine the label stack and look up the label in its LFIB, only to realize that it needs to be popped. It then would need to perform a Layer 3 lookup in its global or VPN-specific routing table in order to correctly forward the packet to the external next-hop router.
However, these routers would need adequate performance capabilities in order to handle the extra traffic. The Next Hop Resolution Protocol (NHRP) could also be used to let routers establish VCs over which they send data, without the need to establish a routing adjacency over the VC. However, NHRP supports only unicast traffic and is not defined for multicast traffic types. Furthermore, NHRP requires the deployment of NHRP servers and could potentially introduce routing loops in the backbone network.
